动物保护组织PETA发布了一则视频，指控希腊有关部门不让他们在巴士和出租车上宣传保护驴。他们提出的口号是：”因游客而受痛苦，请不要骑驴。”
阿斯特拉维尼说，首当其冲的就是这一点，游客们不去骑驴，这生意就做不成了。
2015年，希腊曾制定更严格的法律来保护动物，处罚提高到1.5万欧元和5年监禁。根据该法，商贩必须有正规的驴舍，允许驴每天至少自由活动半小时，在高温下减少负重活动。此外，禁止负重100公斤以上或超过驴自重的五分之一。
但活动人士并不满意，称新法实行以来尚无任何一例受惩治的案件，因此，对驴的虐待仍在继续。
